Edwin Herbert Land

Patent Number:  2435720

Invented: 1946

  • 1930s: Land develops a way to polarize light for optical uses
  • 1937: Starts the Polaroid Corporation to develop products based on polarization
  • 1946: Invented one-step instant photography
  • 1948: First polaroid camera is sold
  • 1965: Polaroid Swinger camera is created and sold for under $20.00
  • 1976: Law suit against Kodak Corporation accuses the company of infringing 12 Polaroid patents related to instant photography

Polaroid photography is a one-step process for developing and printing photographs. It eliminated the need for use of chemicals and a darkroom. A dye diffusion process was used to create a color image on photo paper right after a photo had been shot. The photo developed inside the camera. Later versions allowed the photo to develop outside the camera, in the light.

Invention Impact
Before digital cameras were invented, Polaroid photography was a way for people to capture fun or important moments right away. People also used it in their work to make a visual record of something on the spot.

Invention Evoloution
In 1946 one-step instant photography was first invented. The first polaroid camera was sold shortly after, in 1948. The first polaroid cameras developed pictures inside the body of the camera, in the dark, but later versions developed the photos outside the camera, in the light.
