"It's
a Girl Thing"
Dear
Parents,
Recently
the Career & Technical Education department was awarded a
Verizon Ed Link Grant to offer a program for middle school
age girls in Technology/Engineering. The grant entitled, "Technology/Engineering:
It's A Girl Thing!" is a program designed to strengthen knowledge
and skills of Technology/Engineering (an integral part of
the Science & Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework
and MCAS assessment).
The
research illustrates that girls are disproportionately absent
from advance level high school courses (Computer Science,
Mathematics, Science & Engineering) therefore limiting opportunities
for them in careers in high tech fields or engineering. It
is the goal of the program to offer opportunities for girls
to experience technology/engineering in a very supportive
and nurturing environment. The program will be enhanced by
guest speakers/mentors who are women that represent a wide
variety of technical and engineering professions. Also, there
will be an opportunity for field trips to businesses and industries
that focus on high tech and engineering fields.
The
program will commence the week of January 2, 2003 through
the end of May 2003. This program will be offered during 4th
period enrichment block on days 2 and 5 only. Participation
is limited to a maximum of 14 girls during the 2002-2003 school
year. There will be a closing ceremony and presentation of
projects for all the participants. Students may sign up with
Mr. Whitman in room 113. A permission slip and program description
may be obtained in the main office or from Mr. Whitman.
